An institutional framework for the long-term development of the ECOS technology system

01 Why the Foundation was created

Technologies retain their value only when they continue to evolve. Without ongoing engineering work, testing, knowledge accumulation and adaptation to new conditions, even a strong technical solution can lose relevance over time.

4Bricks takes a different approach. ECOS is not treated as a single construction product or one fixed formulation, but as a long-term mineral technology system that should develop together with the raw-material base, production conditions and areas of application.

To support this continuity, the Engineering Legacy Foundation named after Oleg Ivanovych Levchenko was established — an institutional mechanism for preserving the engineering knowledge base and supporting the long-term development of ECOS.

02 Role of the Foundation

The Engineering Legacy Foundation named after Oleg Ivanovych Levchenko is part of the institutional architecture for the development of ECOS and the formation of an engineering school around this technology system.

Its task is to support systematic work on accumulating engineering knowledge, research, documentation, verification of solutions and the development of new application configurations.

Over time, the Foundation may bring together industrial partners, research organisations and other institutions interested in mineral technologies, local raw materials and solutions with potentially lower dependence on conventional cement.

03 Institutional model

ECOS is a mineral technology system. It combines:

  • the protected ECOS technology core
  • qualification of local mineral raw materials
  • functional adaptation to specific production conditions
  • application configurations for individual areas of use
  • engineering documentation, testing, verification and a knowledge base

Each application configuration is developed and verified separately, taking into account raw materials, equipment, the production process and required performance. The result of one configuration is not transferred automatically to others.

The Foundation supports the long-term engineering basis of this work, while the technology core, protected know-how and intellectual property rights remain under the control of 4Bricks.

04 Two-layer resilience

A two-layer model is used for the long-term resilience of the technology.

Layer I: Corporate architecture

Corporate mechanisms of 4Bricks govern strategic decisions and define:

  • technology governance rules
  • the use of intellectual property
  • protection of the technology core and confidential know-how
  • principles of long-term ECOS development

This layer supports technology control and the protection of key technology assets.

Layer II: Foundation

The Foundation supports continuity of engineering development and coordinates:

  • development of engineering documentation
  • accumulation and systematisation of technology knowledge
  • long-term research and development work

Together, both layers form a resilient institutional model for the development of ECOS.

05 Engineering school and continuity

The engineering basis of ECOS grew from many years of work by Oleg Ivanovych Levchenko with materials, process technology, thermal engineering and applied engineering solutions. The name of the Foundation reflects continuity with the principles established in that work.

The Foundation was created to:

  • preserve engineering principles and accumulated knowledge
  • pass the engineering approach on to the next generations of specialists
  • support the long-term technological evolution of ECOS

In this way, technology development becomes not only the task of individuals, but an institutional process.

06 Research directions

The Foundation’s work is oriented toward mineral technology solutions and the expansion of the ECOS engineering base. Current and potential research directions include:

  • Mineral systems with reduced dependence on conventional cement: research into alternative binders and technological approaches.
  • Alkali-activated systems: study of alkali activation and other mechanisms for forming a mineral matrix.
  • Regional and secondary raw materials: qualification of local mineral components and study of the possible use of secondary materials.
  • Application configurations: development of solutions for plaster, masonry, adhesive, repair and other areas of use.
  • Performance characteristics: work on strength, adhesion, water absorption, durability and other parameters of specific configurations.

07 Industrial integration

ECOS is developed as a technology for practical industrial use on manufacturers’ existing infrastructure. Work in this direction includes:

  • cooperation with industrial and research partners
  • qualification of local raw materials and production conditions
  • development and adaptation of specific application configurations
  • laboratory and independent testing of selected configurations
  • preparation for pilot verification and subsequent industrial implementation
  • preparation of technological and engineering documentation

This approach makes it possible to convert engineering developments into verifiable application configurations adapted to a specific manufacturer, raw-material base and area of use.

08 Funding development

ECOS development may be supported by resources from 4Bricks, technology projects, partnership programmes and other sources provided for by the institutional model.

Such resources may be directed toward:

  • research and development
  • raw-material qualification and engineering documentation
  • laboratory and independent testing
  • preparation of application configurations
  • preparation for pilot and industrial verification

The purpose of this funding is to support the development of the ECOS technology and engineering base.

09 Resilience of the model

The institutional model is designed to support the long-term continuity of ECOS under different corporate scenarios:

  • changes in management or ownership
  • entry of new strategic partners and investors
  • changes in commercial conditions or market situation
  • development of new markets and areas of application

The task of the model is to separate the long-term engineering evolution of the technology from short-term commercial cycles.

10 Value for partners

For manufacturers and industrial partners, the institutional model means:
